Tiger Balm: a miraculous remedy

Invented in 1870 by the Chinese herbalist Aw Chu Kin, Tiger Balm continues to fascinate us. This balm, made from a blend of plants with multiple virtues, was developed by his two sons: Aw Boon Haw (meaning gentle tiger) and Haw Boon Par (gentle leopard).

There are two types of tiger balm: red and white.

Both contain menthol, which acts as an anaesthetic and has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Camphor, which is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, stimulating and anti-bacterial. This is what gives the balm its warm sensation. The fact that it is combined with menthol increases its analgesic effect on the skin tenfold. And clove essential oil, which is a stimulant and anti-infectious.

White Tiger Balm is enriched with eucalyptus essential oil. It effectively clears the respiratory tract in cases of nasal congestion, colds, sinusitis, etc. It is also highly effective against migraines and soothes insect bites.

Red Tiger Balm is enriched with cajeput oil, dementholised essential oil and Chinese cinnamon essential oil. Cajeput oil is effective on a wide range of joint pains, including rheumatism, muscle contractures and aches and pains. Dementholised essential oil is a powerful analgesic and anti-migraine agent. Finally, cinnamon essential oil is anti-infectious, stimulating and invigorating. It gives the balm its pretty orange-red colour.

Take a very small amount of the product, rub it into the area to be treated and stop rubbing as soon as you feel a sensation of heat. This sensation of heat will be combined with the cooling effect of menthol, and it is thanks to this hot-cold effect that you will begin to feel relief in the treated area.

Warning: Never apply Tiger Balm (white or red) to mucous membranes, wounds, around the eyes or to damaged or injured skin. This balm is for external use only. Wash your hands thoroughly after use, as the product is highly concentrated (especially if you have children or pets). And be careful not to get it on your nails! Do not use on young children, pregnant or breast-feeding women.

I've been using Red Tiger Balm for a few years now, and it's a product that's really part of my daily routine. Especially at the moment, because I've made a good resolution: I've started doing sport again!

I use it mainly for aches and pains in my back, and I find that it relieves, soothes and relaxes marvellously. I've already tried Arnica (cream and homeopathy), heating patches etc... and to be honest, I find Tiger Balm much more effective in the long term.

When I have a headache, I rub the equivalent of a grain of rice on my temples and I can do without aspirin. In any case, the less medication I use, the better I feel, so I'm always on the lookout for more natural alternatives.
